Rights of the Child: Public Seminar Series
University of Oxford
‘The Rights of the Child’ seminar series was co-convened by three women (Nika Nazari, We’am Hamdan, and me) from countries in various stages of conflict and disarray – Iran, Palestine, and Sri Lanka, alongside Professor Leon Feinstein of the REES Centre. The seminar series was testimony to our lived experiences, our versions of the worlds we occupy. It was our attempt to bring to light issues, stories, and perspectives we think must be heard when considering the effectiveness of social policy and other mechanisms for the implementation, realisation, delivery or actualisation of the rights of children.
The seminar topics were:
- The UNCRC: Roles and Effectiveness
- Child in the wild: Children in digitsed/digitising world
- Child on the edge: Plight of children in fragile and conflict states
- What is a Child? Challenging universal conceptualisations of children and childhood
- Child as a learner: Creative pedagogies

Learn to Discern: Fighting misinformation in Sri Lanka
Media Empowerment for a Democratic Sri Lanka, IREX (USAID)
Under Media Literacy, IREX adapted the Learn to Discern (L2D) curriculum to the Sri Lankan context, recruited and trained master trainers, developed webinars and videos to promote media literacy, and designed workshops. MEND is also developing an online course in media literacy adapted from IREX’s Very Verified curriculum. While working as the Team Lead of the team who conducted the curriculum revision and designed the webinars, we were able to create a curriculum that was context-sensitive and engaging.
